He is a fiddler extraordinaire whose passion for music pours out every time he plays. Anyone who knows Louis Schryer, knows this very well!
Louis Schryer, is one of Canada’s most respected fiddle players. As a performer, recording artist, composer, and teacher, he lives a very musical life. We first came to know him at the Ontario Fiddling and Stepdancing competitions many years ago. Our shared experience of music at these events left a lasting impression on us all. Louis inspired us back then and he continues to inspire us today.
Louis has been performing for over 25 years. As the only ‘8 time Canadian Fiddle Champion’ and the only one to hold the title of ‘4 time Grand Masters Fiddle Champion’, he’s in a class of his own. This is not difficult to understand after you listen to him play….he rouses audiences every time his bow touches the strings. His playing is unique because it is filled with stylistic diversity that crosses the spectrum of fiddle and violin music. He plays it all….Old Time, French, Celtic, Swing Jazz, Classical, and more. Whether he performs as a solo artist, in a small groups and orchestras, or as a backup fiddler for various bands, he’s able to cross genres with what seems to be no effort at all. His natural skill and ability is obvious, but his love for playing is even more apparent. Those who know Louis and his music say that “he doesn’t just play, he converses musically with artists and listeners alike”. We are lucky to be able to say that we know this well….from the many gatherings, performances, and now Music Camps that we’ve shared with Louis over the years.
We cannot wait to ‘converse’ with Louis when he comes to Camp in July! We look forward to his return and to his inspiration, passion, and generous spirit!
