Some of our earliest memories of playing music with others come from the Ontario Fiddling and Stepdancing contests that we attended as children and young adults. We made many friends at these musical gatherings, one of which was Louis Schryer. He, along with his siblings Pierre, Daniel, Raymond, Julie, and their parents, introduced us to Quebecois fiddle and piano playing, a style that has remained with us ever since. Louis and his triplet brothers also gave us our first experience of 3 part harmony fiddle arrangements. Between their classical training and Quebecois inspired tunes, Louis and his family delighted us with their music and playing every time we saw them. Years passed since those formative days at the contests and life took us all in different directions. Louis went on to become a 4-time Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Champion and has been performing for over 25 years. He is one of Canada’s most respected fiddle players now and is featured on many top country recording artists CD’s. Louis has four CDs of his own and plays all styles of fiddle music.
Fortunately, Louis and his own family settled in Chapeau Quebec, not far from where both Agnes and Siobheann now live with their own families. For the last four years, he has been teaching their children to play the fiddle along with many other students from the area. We are thrilled that Louis will be with us for a whole week at Camp this year and look forward to everyone having the opportunity to learn from him!
