Michael Biggins

Accordion | Piano

We are looking so forward to welcoming highly talented multi-instrumentalist, Michael Biggins to Music Camp this summer! We have been trying to bring Michael to Camp for years so we are beyond excited about his pending arrival in July!

Hailing from Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, England, Michael is an award winning pianist and accordionist. In 2021, he became the first ever pianist to win the coveted “BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year” award. Now based in Glasgow, Scotland, Michael is an active performer, teacher, and session musician. He currently tours with The Canny Band, TRIP, Tom McConville and The Ross Couper Band.

Michael graduated from The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow under the tutelage of Professor Sinae Lee on piano. Prior to this, he studied at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester where he studied with Graham Caskie. Michael also studied with respected pianists Eileen Bown and Jean Armstrong who are based in Newcastle. Whilst living in Scotland, he developed a unique approach to traditional music on the piano, drawing influence from Classical music and his own traditional roots in Northumbria.

The Canny Band, consisting of himself, Sam Mabbett (accordion), and Callum Convoy (bodhran) have made a name for themselves in the Glasgow traditional music scene, with numerous high-profile appearances on BBC Alba and BBC Radio Scotland. In 2021, they won the Up and Coming Artist of the Year at the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards. Their self-titled debut album was released in 2022 and features mostly self-penned tunes arranged in their own unique style, ranging from fast-paced reels and jigs to slower, sensitive, and carefully arranged numbers such as ‘Helen’s Song’ and ‘Jacob’s Waltz.’

We can’t wait to work with Michael in person and have everyone at Music Camp experience his many musical gifts!
